Hurricane prediction has come a long way since 2005’s Hurricane Rita missed its predicted target—Houston—entirely. Thanks to improvements in the way hurricane models measure and incorporate winds high up in the atmosphere, forecasters have a pretty good sense as far as three days ahead of time as to where a hurricane is heading; that’s why, today, evacuation orders have been issued for areas around New Orleans in advance of Hurricane Isaac.
